Learning and Teaching at Ho Yu

Ho Yu’s teaching model continues to evolve with the times, making it one of the first schools in Hong Kong to implement “Self-Directed Learning.” Additionally, the school promotes personalized learning, as we firmly believe that each student has their own pace of learning. It is evident that Ho Yu adapts its teaching strategies according to changes in society and the needs of its students.

Ho Yu has always held the belief: “Return learning to the students, enabling them to own and embrace learning,” encouraging students to actively explore knowledge. Therefore, we have introduced the “Pre-learning and Sharing” approach, complemented by innovative teaching methods. Teachers carefully produce videos using various software tools, allowing students to preview lessons at home, thereby enhancing learning effectiveness.

After students complete their pre-learning at home, they report, exchange, and showcase what they have learned in the classroom. Teachers provide immediate feedback and guidance, gradually addressing common difficulties faced by the class. The entire classroom experience is not traditional one-way teaching; instead, student participation is high, and the learning atmosphere is vibrant. Through the self-directed learning model, students consolidate their knowledge and strengthen their communication skills. This model has also been extended to our interdisciplinary program—”Crossing Boundaries, Exploring the World”—where students are encouraged to search for information, set themes, conduct street interviews, and ultimately design their own project proposals and products, enhancing their collaborative problem-solving abilities.

To better facilitate self-directed learning, Ho Yu has added numerous facilities and undergone campus renovations.

First, to cultivate students’ diverse abilities, the school has upgraded the STEM+ LAB, equipped with movable tables and chairs, power outlets, tool carts, and more, allowing students to freely rearrange the space for collaborative learning. Here, students engage in creative tasks such as building solar-powered cars and 3D models.

Second, the school has renovated the library, now named “Yu Book House,” which features a spacious activity area for students to exchange reading insights. Additionally, Yu Book House includes two glass discussion rooms for self-directed learning and group discussions.

Furthermore, the Humanities Room is equipped with an immersive teaching system that allows students to engage in 360-degree learning experiences, “stepping into” various scenarios. For example, students can virtually explore the Palace Museum to understand its structure and history, making learning more effective through immersion.

Ho Yu emphasizes teaching according to individual aptitudes, implementing adaptive learning by tailoring goals, methods, and content for each student. Students with different abilities have different learning objectives: high-ability students engage in extended learning, while average-ability students focus on consolidating knowledge.

In addition to the core curriculum, the school offers a variety of diversified courses to cater to different types of students.

For instance, the school provides a biotechnology course where students learn about DNA structure by creating origami DNA models and study genetic defects and diseases through candy models. Students also explore the microbial world, investigate household chemistry and the effects of antibiotics on bacterial growth, and conduct water quality tests to connect learning with societal issues.

Moreover, Ho Yu offers life planning and values education classes, enabling students to understand themselves early on, learn about different career types, and even visit various workplaces to find their personal direction.

Ho Yu Secondary School invests heavily in learning resources to provide students with an excellent learning environment. Students continuously equip themselves with knowledge, skills, and the right attitude, developing the qualities of a “Ho Yu Person” and eventually gaining admission to their desired universities. We firmly believe that every “Ho Yu Person” can overcome challenges, pursue their dreams, and courageously explore the world.
