Chinese Language Education (Chinese Language, Putonghua)

-Passing on and Promoting the Essence of Culture
  • Curriculum Highlights :
    • To enhance students’ reading interest: students are encouraged to develop a regular reading habit through a reading incentive programme.  The text teaching during the lesson is adopted to enable students to digest the text and enhance their reading interest through regular reading recommendations.
    • To cultivate students’ character and virtues:  the text teaching for senior secondary students focuses on the cultivation of ideological and moral education, the promotion of value education, and the cultivation of students’ understanding of and reflection on Chinese culture.
    • To emphasis on classical literature books: classical texts with literary elements and cultural connotations are selected at all levels of secondary school to develop students’ language sense and enhance their language proficiency.
    • To provide integrated training: listening, speaking, reading and writing are the main focus of the junior secondary school, providing a balanced learning experience to enhance students’ ability in using language in an integrated manner and improving their generic skills.
  • Learning and Teaching Features:
    • To emphasis on Chinese Classics reading: intergrade reading competitions are held annually for students to learn, compete, and observe through reading to enhance their effectiveness of learning.
    • To add fun in learning, and increase students’ motivation through lively teaching methods such as “flipped classroom”, e-learning platform, etc.
  • Assessment and Evaluation:
    • The assessment of junior secondary Chinese Language subject consists of reading, writing, listening and speaking.  In addition to the relevant examinations are held twice a year, students’ daily performance in assessment, assignments and learning attitudes are counted as part of the subject grade.
    • The Putonghua subject focuses on the training of students’ listening and speaking skills.  There is no examination, and the student’s grades are only calculated on the basis of average scores, which consist of three aspects, namely assessment, assignments and learning attitude.
  • Intensive Training and Support:
    • The Chinese Language Subject:
      • Inside the classroom: the width and depth of learning modules are adjusted according to students’ abilities and needs.  Tiered assignments are designed to cater for students with different abilities as far as possible so that they can learn at different paces.
      • Outside the classroom:  students with potential are arranged to participate in writing, calligraphy and speech competitions so that they can thrive under pressure.
    • Putonghua︰
      • Inside the school: students with high ability are recommended to be the voice recorder of the campus TV station, so that they can show their talents.
      • Outside the school: students are selected to participate in inter-school speech contests, speaking competitions, etc. to explore their potentials.
  • Life-wide Learning
    • The Chinese Language subject organizes “Reading Week” or cross-language learning activities with other Key Learning Areas (KLAs) through a collaborative mode, so that students can broaden their horizons and fall in love with reading and languages through well-designed activities.
    • The Putonghua subject encourages students to participate in different activities both inside and outside the school, such as Lantern Festival riddle-guessing activities and off-campus speech activities, so that they can experience the fun of Putonghua.
